October 2008 - We are celebrating Major's Declaration Week by declaring the Chemistry Major Fair promotion the most successful in the college. As part of our activities, we are raffling off a brand new computer picture (autographed even) to one lucky major. Second prize will the partially used gluestick. Stay tuned for additional promotions!

Directions to New for Fall 2008: We have two new faculty members joining us this fall. Jennifer Look and Adam Kiefer are some flavor of inorganic chemists and we look forward to working with them. None of those depicted below are our new faculty members... A few of our rising chemistry majors ready to earn their feathers...

From the Chair Welcome to the Department of Chemistry! Every member of our staff is committed to providing an educational atmosphere that is interesting, challenging, and exciting. We offer a flexible Bachelor of Science degree, allowing each student to pursue their individual interest in the chemical sciences. Our department is certified by the American Chemical Society, and offers certified degrees in Chemistry and Biochemistry. Beyond the classroom, students gain valuable experience in the laboratory, challenged to solve chemical problems through hands-on use of our extensive collection of modern instrumentation. We are also committed to involving our undergraduates in our research laboratories. Through research, our students get individual attention, guidance, and direction from our faculty members, exploring fundamental problems in organic, inorganic, analytical, and physical chemistry. Recognizing the importance of pursuing ideas that are more interdisciplinary in nature, many projects involve colleagues from other scientific disciplines such as Biology, Computer Science, and Pharmacy. Our graduates have many opportunities. Some of our students have gone on to Medical School, Pharmacy School, Optometry School, Dental School, and Law School. Some of our graduates decide to continue their chemistry studies in graduate school, and many matriculate to top-ranked chemistry programs. Some of our graduates use their degree to get jobs in many different areas including pharmaceutical and kaolin industries, as well as teaching. If you would like more information about chemistry, or to visit our department, please feel free to send me an email (hugdahl_jd@mercer.edu), or call our department secretary (478-301-2767). Thank you for your interest in our program! Dr. Jeffrey Hugdahl |
