SERMACS 2002

SERMACS 2002 in Charleston (November 13 - 16, 2002) saw the department well represented. Those presenting their work include Drs. Jeffrey Hugdahl, Scott Davis, Nancy Dopke, and Joel Dopke. Students attending the meeting include Ben Coursey, Ron Hunter, and Ketan Patel. Dr. Bob Hargrove was also attending, representing the Middle Georgia Section of the American Chemical Society. Heather Voegtle and Mark Perpall, two of our recent graduates, were also there presenting the research they are doing in graduate school.

On Thursday, 11/14, Dr. Hugdahl talked about some Biochemistry in a seminar entitled "Interactions of Plant Tubulins with a Carbamate Herbicide." Undergraduates contributing to the work include Kensley Nichols, Ashley Mehaffie, and Tiffany Ellis.

Friday afternoon, 11/15, student Ben Coursey presented a poster entitled "Nucleophilic Aromatic Substitution Reactions of Substituted Diphenylacetylenes." This was work done with Dr. Davis.

On Saturday, 11/16, students Ron Hunter and Ketan Patel took part in the Undergraduate Poster session. Mr. Hunter presented the results of research he has done with Dr. Nancy Dopke in a poster entitled "Synthesis and Reactivity of a Platinum Rich Heterometallic Complex." Another student, Jason Nash, was a coauthor on this project. Mr. Patel, working with Dr. Joel Dopke, gave a poster titled "Synthesis and Chearacterization of Thiolate-Substituted Tungsten Halide Clusters."

It was good to see two former students at the meeting as well. Heather Voegtle gave a very good talk on "Spectroscopic Properties of the Cys436Ser Mutant of Cytochrome 2B4 (CYP2B4): Comparison to Other Heme Systems." A student at the University of South Carolina, Heather will be defending her dissertation and getting her Ph.D. in about a month. We wish her well and look forward to having her drop in and give a seminar to the department. Mark Perpall, just starting his third year in graduate school at Clemson University, gave a poster on "Inverse Carbon Opals as Photonic Crystal Biosensors."
