The Robert B. McCarty Memorial Scholarships
______________________________________________________________________________
The Robert B. McCarty Memorial Scholarship program was established in 1979 to encourage
students to pursue a professional career in chemistry. The scholarships are made possible
through a gift by Muriel McCarty in memory of
her husband Robert. Mr. McCarty, a 1925 graduate of Mercer University, devoted his life to
work in the field of chemistry with the Gulf Oil Corporation.
The Robert B. McCarty Scholarship recipients receive $3,000 annually. Applications
are accepted from both entering freshmen and rising sophomores each spring. The recipients
are expected to become candidates for the Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry and to
have a strong interest in a career in chemistry. The Scholarship will be renewed each year
for as long as the recipients, known as the McCarty Scholars, remain eligible. Those
receiving the Scholarship will have no obligation of repayment, but are encouraged to
contribute to the Robert B. McCarty Memorial Scholarship Fund in the future.
Application Procedure
For the entering freshman:
Applicants should send a statement of interest in applying for the
Scholarship, including a description of career goals in the field of chemistry. These
