The Robert B. McCarty Memorial Scholarships
______________________________________________________________________________

The Robert B. McCarty Memorial Scholarship program was established in 1979 to encourage students to pursue a professional career in chemistry. The scholarships are made possible through a gift by Muriel McCarty in memory of
her husband Robert. Mr. McCarty, a 1925 graduate of Mercer University, devoted his life to work in the field of chemistry with the Gulf Oil Corporation.

The Robert B. McCarty Scholarship recipients receive $3,000 annually.  Applications are accepted from both entering freshmen and rising sophomores each spring. The recipients are expected to become candidates for the Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry and to have a strong interest in a career in chemistry. The Scholarship will be renewed each year for as long as the recipients, known as the McCarty Scholars, remain eligible. Those receiving the Scholarship will have no obligation of repayment, but are encouraged to contribute to the Robert B. McCarty Memorial Scholarship Fund in the future.

Application Procedure

For the entering freshman:

Applicants should send a statement of interest in applying for the Scholarship, including a description of career goals in the field of chemistry. These materials should be sent to:

    Dr. Jeffrey Hugdahl
    Chair, Department of Chemistry
    Mercer University, Macon, GA 31207.

•Applicants should ask their high school chemistry teacher to submit a confidential letter of recommendation to the Chair of the Department of Chemistry at the address above.
•Applicants must have submitted a formal application for admission to the College of  Liberal Arts of Mercer University, including an official transcript of high school grades.  Additional transcripts need not be sent.
•The deadline for receipt of all application materials is March 1 annually.

•The Scholarship recipient(s) will be notified by April 1 annually.
•The deadline for acceptance of the Scholarship is April 15 annually.

The Scholarship Selection Committee, headed by the Chair of the Department of Chemistry, will consist of the faculty of the Department of Chemistry and Mercer University’s Director of Admissions or a designated representative of  the Director of Admissions. The Committee will determine Scholarship recipient(s) from among all applicants, considering a strong interest in a lifetime career in chemistry as the primary criteria. Additionally, applicants’ excellence will be determined, in part, by class rank, grade point average, college board scores, and chemistry teacher’s recommendations.

Scholarship Renewal

The Scholarship will be renewed each year, for an additional $3000 award, provided that the McCarty Scholars continue to meet these eligibility conditions:

•The Scholar’s residence at Mercer University must remain uninterrupted, except for the summer term.
•The Scholar must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 in all courses.
•The Scholar must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 in chemistry courses with no chemistry course grade below “C.”
•The Scholar must complete at least thirty semester hours of course work during the academic year.

renewal. The Scholarship will not be renewed once a student had been declared ineligible.
